Quicken Interchange Format QIF files are specially formatted text files that are made up of lists of QIF items that describe accounts, transactions within those accounts, lists that you want to export, and options that you can include. Transactions are exported for a specified date range. QIF allows import of all accounts within a single QIF file, any exported list, and transactions into individual asset and loan accounts including house and vehicle and cash accounts.

For example, if you export data from a cash account that contains transfers to a vehicle account and then import that data into a new file, Quicken creates a vehicle account in the new file's Account List.

This new vehicle account is empty except for transfers from cash. If the account you're importing data into has different category or tag names from those of the account that you're exporting from, Quicken offers to create new categories and tags for the items you're importing.
